2007 CWB Thunderbird Rendezvous and Regatta

Twelve Thunderbirds gathered Friday August 3rd at the Center for Wooden Boats in Lake Union for the Rendezvous and Regatta.  After a welcoming and spinnaker clinic put on by Dale Dunning on Barbaree #60 Friday a skipper’s meeting was held Saturday morning August 4th.   Kemp Jones passed out charts of the lake with buoy locations and explained the Duck Dodge format we would use.  There were 10 racing class boats and 2 cruising class boats which shared the same start and courses.

Wind velocities were 3 to 10 knots mostly from the North with huge shifts and occasionally places in the lake where no wind existed.  Each race specified either port or starboard mark rounding’s and passing sometimes four different marks.  On Saturday there were five race winners in the six races sailed with Fandango #9 winning the 3erd and 4th races and leading all other boats.  After racing we enjoyed a keg of beer provided by the Snoqualmie Brewing Co.  There was a great catered dinner Saturday of fish, foul rice and vegetables plus cookies followed by the movie “Wind” projected on a Thunderbird mainsail

On the Sunday first race  Falcon’s Genoa dropped to the deck on the first beat and crew had to climb the mast to get the halyard. The wind conditions were so unpredictable that in spite of this difficulty Falcon was able to get a second in that race.  Fandango won two races and Barbaree won two races Sunday while Falcon scored four 2nd places.

In the racing class Fandango was 1st, Falcon 2nd and Barbaree 3rd.  In the cruising class Pangloss was 1st and Feather was 2nd.  Marvin Lew’s “Intrepid” received the award for the best maintained Thunderbird
